What are these so called "tigers" in the water??? These are OSCARS or known as "tiger fish".
Oscar or tiger fish is a species of fish from cichlid family and they naturally reside in South America.
Though this fish may attract you by its appearance, this fish is known for its aggressive and territorial behavior that might scare you especially if you're a first timer of having a pet fish. This is also the reason why it is hard to find tank mates for Oscars.
Oscars may live for up to 20 years and grow for up to 12 inches. They are omnivorous species and mating and feeding times can fuel their aggression so be careful when feeding them, they might bite you especially if they are really hungry.
Setting up its tank is not that hard for it only requires freshwater, rocks, and caves. Fine-grained sand will also be ideal but not coarse substrate because Oscars like to dig and this might scratch them. Live plants are unlikely to be eaten but are not safe for they may be uprooted while they dig through the substrate.
These are just some of the basic information I think you need to know about Oscars or tiger fish just in case you're planning to have a pet like an Oscar. Hope that you guys learned something about them!
